They say the eyes are the windows to the soul, but as an optometrist, I’ve spent my career seeing them as a marvel of biological engineering. However, a trip to France changed my perspective entirely.
I first encountered Iris Photography while travelling abroad, and I was immediately struck by the sheer beauty of it. The colours, the intricate textures of the stroma, and the completely unique "landscapes" within each eye were—forgive the pun—absolutely eye-catching!
I knew I had to bring this incredible art form home to Northern Ireland.
From Clinical to Creative

While I already understood the anatomy of the eye, capturing its beauty as fine art required a new set of skills. I dove headfirst into a "crash course" in Photoshop and travelled to England and Belfast to attend specialist courses. My goal was simple: to combine my clinical precision with a new-found artistic flair.
In January 2024, I officially launched Northern Ireland’s first Iris Photography service, right here in our beautiful practice in Coleraine.
The Experience: Where Science Meets Art
Today, I’ve transformed one of our consulting rooms into a bespoke photography studio. The process is fascinating:
The Capture: Using specialised macro equipment, we capture the high-resolution detail of your iris in a comfortable, professional setting.
The Edit: This is where the magic happens. I use my Photoshop training to highlight the natural pigments and structures, creating a custom piece of art that reflects your style.
The Result: A one-of-a-kind masterpiece that is as unique as a fingerprint.
More Than Just a Photo
Since launching, the response has been incredible. I’ve seen couples capturing their connection in a shared frame, families creating a "gallery of eyes," and even local businesses bringing their teams in for a bespoke piece of corporate art that represents their collective vision.
Whether you are looking for a meaningful gift or a statement piece for your home, Iris Photography offers a perspective you’ve quite literally never seen before.
